A guide to the Burnley cemetery records on familysearch

This page gives indexes to the films listed in the Burnley Cemetery records on familysearch.org.

The link in the caption of each table takes you to the film described in the table. The links open in a new tab so that you can refer back to this page easily. Each film contains several sets of images.

The first column of each table is the image number of the first image of the set, usually the marker image. The second column is the name of the register in that set. The last column gives the range of burial numbers or pages in that set. If there's a date range column it's the range for the whole register, not just for the image set; some of the registers straddle two films.

How to use

The burial registers contain lists of burials in order of burial number. The dates are also in order. Each burial is one line of the register; there are about 27 burials on each page, depending on which register you're looking at.

If you don't know the burial number already, you can probably find it on lan-opc (link opens in new tab). If you can't find the burial number, you'll probably have to do a lot of reading. There's a lot of burials!

The lan-opc search results usually show a page number that you can use to go to approximately the image you want. Add the page number to the image number of the first image in the set. If it's a register that straddles a film, you have to subtract the page number of the first page on the film for pages that are in part two of the register.

If you don't know the page number, you can go to approximately the correct image by calculation; subtract the first burial in the register from the burial number, divide the result by the number of burials per page and add that result to the index of the first image.

In the burial record you can find the grave number. Use the grave number to look up the grave in the appropriate grave book. If the grave number starts with letters, choose the grave book with the same letters.

The grave books list the graves in numerical order, one line per grave. Usually there are 30 graves per page, so it's possible to calculate an approximate image number from the grave number, in the same manner used for the for the burial registers. The grave register shows who bought the grave and gives the burial numbers of all the burials in the grave. You can use the burial numbers to find the entries in the burial register for the other burials in the same grave. Always look at neighbouring graves too - sometimes there are double, triple or larger plots.

In the graves register you should find a column headed "Page in family register". Usually it's a page number followed by a one or more letters. If there's no letter, use 'A'. The letters indicate which family graves book to choose; find the indicated page number within that book.

Each entry in a family grave book occupies half a page and shows a bit more detail than the grave book. There's a list of burials with names and dates. For double plots, sometimes both graves are in the same entry, sometimes they have separate entries on different pages.
