GAVE LIFE FOR DOG
-----
BRIERFIELD MAN'S TRAGIC ACCIDENT
How a Brierfield man lost his life
in endeavouring to rescue his dog
from deep water in Marsden Cross
Quarry was told at an inquest at
Brierfield last Wednesday, on Thomas
Herbert Shutt (46), loom overlooker,
of 64, Castle-street, Brierfield.

Mrs Julia Shutt said that her husband
had enjoyed good health and had not been
medically attended for 14 years. About
11-30 a.m. last Sunday, he said he would
take their black spaniel dog for short
walk. The dog was on the lead, and he
also took a black rubber ball for the dog
to play.
The dog returned home about 12-15 a.m.,
dripping wet. The dog was keen on going
into water, and she did not think anything
unusual had occurred. She thought the dog
had left her husband talking to someone.
When he did not return for dinner she made
enquiries and searched the district. When
he did not return during the afternoon she
reported the matter to the police.
  Alan Watson Shutt, apprentice electrical
engineer, said that his father could swim
but was not a good swimmer.
P.C. James Spencer said that on Monday
a black rubber ball was found in the water
at Marsden Cross Quarry. Dragging opera-
tions were commenced, and at 11 o'clock on
Tuesday morning the body, fully dressed, was
recovered from water about 20ft. deep.
P.C. Spencer produced the dead man's
watch, which had stopped at 11-57.
Continuing, P.C. Spencer said that the
quarry was situated in a field adjoining
Parson Clough Farm. There was no footpath
to it, and to get there one would have to
trespass and get through a fence. At the
point where the body was recovered there
was a sheer drop of 2 1/2ft., and the ground
sloped towards the edge.

EFFECTIVELY FENCED
In reply to Mr. H. N. Roberts, who
appeared for the owners of the quarry, Cross
Quarries, Ltd., witness said that the quarry
was effectively fenced.
The Coroner said that he was quite
satisfied that the quarry was effectively
fenced, and it was quite clear that to get
to the quarry the man must have trespassed.
The man had been drowned somewhat
unusual circumstances, and whilst he had not
a great deal of evidence, he was quite con-
fident that he was accidentally drowned.
He had come to the conclusion that the man
had no troubles whatsoever. He had taken
the dog for walk, and took a ball with
the object of giving the dog some congenial
exercise. In all probability the ball and the
dog got into the water, and it was extremely
probable that the man was trying to get
the dog out. The ground sloped, and there
was a 2 1/2ft. sheer drop, and the dog would
have some difficulty in scrambling out of
the water. It was quite probable that the
man, in leaning forward to get the dog out
fell into the water and was drowned.
Mr. Rowland returned a verdict of
"Accidental death," and expressed sympathy
with the widow and her son. Mr Roberts
associated himself with the remarks.
Mr. Shutt's tragic death was reported in
last Wednesday's "Express." Mr. Shutt was
a keen sportsman, and was well-known in
Lancashire League cricketing circles, in which
he had played and umpired for many years.
