Nelson Leader - Friday 11 July 1941
BROWN-SMITH. A quiet but pretty wedding, which united Colne and Brierfield
families, was solemnised at the Wheatley Lane Inghamite Church on Saturday.
The bride was Miss Mary Alice Smith, second daughter of Mr. Samuel Smith
and the late Mrs. Smith, of 41, William Street, Colne, and the bridegroom
was Mr Herbert Brown, only son of Mr. George Brown and the late Mrs. Brown,
of 23, Regent Street, Brierfield. The ceremony was conducted by Mr. Hartley
Whittaker. Given away by her father, the bride wore a blue woollen costume,
a mulberry hat, and shoes to tone, and her flowers were a shoulder spray
of cream roses. Miss Cissy Brown, sister of the bridegroom. was the
bridesmaid, and Mrs. Elsie Horton, sister of the bride, was the matron of
honour. The former chose a clover costume, with blue accessories, and the
latter was attired in a pink two piece woollen suit, with navy blue
accessories. They both wore shoulder sprays of cream roses. The best man was
Mr. Benjamin Horton, brother-in-law of the bride. A reception was held at
the Cooperative Cafe after the ceremony. Mr. and Mrs. Brown, who later left
for their honeymoon at Blackpool, received many useful presents, including
a fruit set and a set of fruit servers from employees at the Stonebridge
Mill, Colne, where the bride is employed,
